Frequently Asked Questions

History of Henna

A Brief Introduction of Henna :

Henna has been used throughout Africa, India, and the Middle East for thousands of years. For centuries, mehndi "the art of henna painting on the body" has been practiced in India, Africa, and the Middle East, where the henna plant is believed to bring love and good fortune, and to protect against evil. Mehndi is traditionally practiced for wedding ceremonies, during important rites of passage, and in times of joyous celebration. A paste made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant is applied to the skin, and when removed several hours later, leaves beautiful markings on the skin that fade naturally over 1 to 3 weeks.

Henna In Depth:

Henna or Heena (Lawsonia inermis, syn. L. alba) is a flowering plant, the sole species in the genus Lawsonia in the family Lythraceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, and northern Australasia in semi-arid zones. Henna is a tall shrub or small tree, 2–6 m high. It is glabrous, multibranched with spine tipped branchlets. Leaves are opposite, entire, glabrous, sub-sessile, elliptical, and broadly lanceolate (1.5–5.0 cm x 0.5–2 cm), acuminate, having depressed veins on the dorsal surface. During the onset of precipitation intervals, the plant grows rapidly; putting out new shoots, then growth slows. The leaves gradually yellow and fall during prolonged dry or cool intervals. Henna flowers have four sepals and a 2 mm calyx tube with 3 mm spread lobes. Petals are obvate, white or red stamens inserted in pairs on the rim of the calyx tube. Ovary is four celled, style up to 5 mm long and erect. Fruits are small, brownish capsules, 4–8 mm in diameter, with 32–49 seeds per fruit, and open irregularly into four splits.[1] Lawsone content in leaves is negatively associated with the number of seeds in the fruits [2]

Chemistry and allergic reactions:

Allergic reactions to natural henna are rare. The onset of a reaction to natural henna occurs within a few hours, symptoms being itching, shortness of breath, and/or tightness in the chest. Some people have an allergic reaction to an essential oil used to "terp" the mix, and others are allergic to lemon juice often used to mix henna.

Lawsone, the dye molecule in henna, can cause hemolytic oxidation in people who have G6PD deficiency, an inherited enzyme deficiency. A large application of henna to a child with G6PD deficiency (such as scalp, palms and soles) may cause severe hemolytic crisis and may be fatal [12]Ingestion of a henna by a person with G6PD deficiency can be fatal.

Traditions of henna as body art:

The different words for henna in ancient languages imply that henna had more than one point of discovery and origin, and different pathways of daily and ceremonial use.

Henna has been used to adorn young women’s bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. The earliest text mentioning henna in the context of marriage and fertility celebrations comes from the Ugaritic legend of Baal and Anath [13], which has references to women marking themselves with henna in preparation to meet their husbands, and Anath adorning herself with henna to celebrate a victory over the enemies of Baal. Wall paintings excavated at Akrotiri (dating prior to the eruption of Thera in 1680 BCE) show women with markings consistent with henna on their nails, palms and soles, in a tableau consistent with the henna bridal description from Ugarit [14] Many statuettes of young women dating between 1500 and 500 BCE along the Mediterranean coastline have raised hands with markings consistent with henna. This early connection between young, fertile women and henna seems to be the origin of the Night of the Henna, which is now celebrated world-wide.

The Night of the Henna was celebrated by most groups in the areas where henna grew naturally: Jews, [15], Muslims[16], Hindus, Christians and Zoroastrians, among others, all celebrated marriages by adorning the bride, and often the groom, with henna.

Across the henna-growing region, Purim [15], Eid[17], Diwali[18], Karva Chauth, Passover, Nawruwz, Mawlid, and most saints’ days were celebrated with some henna. Favorite horses, donkeys, and salukis had their hooves, paws, and tails hennaed. Battle victories, births, circumcision, birthdays, Zar, as well as weddings, usually included some henna as part of the celebration. When there was joy, there was henna, as long as henna was available. [19]

Henna was regarded as having “Barakah”, blessings, and was applied for luck as well as joy and beauty.[16] Brides typically had the most henna, and the most complex patterns, to support their greatest joy, and wishes for luck. Some bridal traditions were very complex, such as those in Yemen, where the Jewish bridal henna process took four or five days to complete, with multiple applications and resist work.

The fashion of "Bridal Mehndi" in Northern Libya and in North Indian diasporas is currently growing in complexity and elaboration, with new innovations in glitter, gilding, and fine-line work. Recent technological innovations in grinding, sifting, temperature control, and packaging henna, as well as government encouragement for henna cultivation, have improved dye content and artistic potential for henna.

Though traditional henna artists were Nai caste in India, and barbering castes in other countries, (socially low classes) talented contemporary henna artists can command high fees for their work. Women in countries where women are discouraged from working outside the home can find socially acceptable, lucrative work doing henna. Morocco, Mauritania[20], Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, as well as India and many other countries have thriving women’s henna businesses. These businesses are often open all night for Eids, Diwali and Karva Chauth, and many women may work as a team for a large wedding where hundreds of guests will be hennaed as well as the bride and groom.

Black Henna:

“Black Henna” is a misnomer arising from imports of plant-based hair dyes into the West in the late 19th century. Partly fermented, dried indigo was called “black henna” because it could be used in combination with henna to dye hair black. This gave rise to the belief that there was such a thing as “black henna” which could dye skin black. Indigo will not dye skin black. Pictures of indigenous people with black body art (either alkalized henna or from some other source) also fed the belief that there was such a thing as “black henna.”

In the 1990s, henna artists in Africa, India, the Arabian Peninsula and the West began to experiment with para-phenylenediamine (PPD) based black hair dye, applying it as a thick paste as they would apply henna, in an effort to find something that would quickly make jet black temporary body art. PPD can cause severe allergic reactions, with blistering, intense itching, permanent scarring, and permanent chemical sensitivities[21] [22]. Estimates of allergic reactions range between 3% and 15%. Henna does not cause these injuries[23].

Para-phenylenediamine is illegal for use on skin in western countries, though enforcement is lax. When used in hair dye, the PPD amount must be below 6%, and application instructions warn that the dye not touch the scalp and the dye must be quickly rinsed away. “Black henna” pastes have PPD percentages from 10% to 60%, and are left on the skin for half an hour.

Para-phenylenediamine “black henna” use is widespread, particularly in tourist areas. Because the blistering reaction appears 3 to 12 days after the application, most tourists have left and do not return to show how much damage the artist has done. This permits the artists to continue injuring others, unaware they are causing severe injuries. The high profit margins of ‘black henna” and the demand for body art that emulates “tribal tattoos” further encourage artists to ignore the dangers. It is not difficult to recognize and avoid para-phenylenediamine “black henna”:

  • if a paste stains torso skin black in less than ½ hour, it has PPD in it, and little or no henna.
  • if the paste is mixed with peroxide, or if peroxide is wiped over the design to bring out the color, it has PPD in it, and little or no henna.

Anyone who has an itching and blistering reaction to a black body stain should go to a doctor, and report that they have had an application of para-phenylenediamine to their skin.

PPD sensitivity is life-long and once sensitized, the use of synthetic hair dye can be life threatening [24]. These injuries are not caused by henna, and a person can use henna as hair dye.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does the mehndi/henna tattoo last?

The design lasts from a period of one to four weeks. This depends on factors like the depth of the henna dye stain, what part of the body the design has been done on (it sinks deeper and fades away quicker on hands) and the amount of times the design is exposed to rubbing, soap and water. Henna designs also fade away quicker in chlorine and seawater.

What colours are available?

The natural dye colour when applied on the skin varies from dark brown to deep burnt orange.

How long does it have to be on the skin?

The longer the henna is left on the skin the darker the design gets. A minimum time of two hours is recommended.

What has to be done once the dried henna is peeled off?

Peeled off henna goes darker the next 24 hours so once peeled off the area should not be exposed to water for a period of 12-24 hours.

Does this Kind of tattooing hurt? Is it safe?

No it does not as it does not involve piercing or using of needles. Ticklish people may be a bit more sensitive to it. Henna is all natural but the paste itself may have essential oils and other natural ingridients in it. People can be allergic to natural substances not just chemicals therefore persons having henna application should mention any allergic reactions they may have to the henna artist before being hennaed.

Why are some designs black and some orange?

The black design seen in pictures still has the henna on the body. The orange design is the tattoo after the mehndi has been scraped off.

What do the symbols mean?

Traditionally the flower and leaf designs symbolize fertility. The peacock designs symbolize love. The bridal designs have special meaning to them and the designs are a combination of Ganesh - the God of Good Luck, traditional musical instruments, designs of the groom and brides face and many other designs.

Is  it a religious custom?

It is more of a cultural one. It traditionally applied at the times of celebrations be it weddings or festivals. Women use it as a cosmetic to beautify themselves.

History

Henna has been used throughout Africa, India, and the Middle East for thousands of years.

A paste made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant is applied to the skin, and when removed several hours later, leaves beautiful markings on the skin that fade naturally over 1 to 3 weeks.

Henna Use in the Past
Besides being the key ingredient in mehndi, henna has also been used to dye the manes and hooves of horses, and to color wool, silk, and animal skins, as well as men's beards. Studies of mummies dating back to 1200 BC show that henna was used on the hair and nails of the pharaohs.

Henna Today
Until the art of mehndi became hot news in 1996, henna was mostly used in the United States as a hair dye. Widely recognized now as a wonderful way to dye the skin and to achieve the look of a tattoo, traditional henna uses and application processes have gone contemporary. Although some will always prepare their own henna paste, mehndi kits of varying quality, with foolproof instructions and convenient stencils, can be purchased in many retail and online outlets (including this Web site).

As far back as 1200 B.C. the ancient Egyptians were using henna on their nails and hair. Henna was also used to dye animal skins, textiles, and men's beards. Once the henna plant's cooling properties were discovered, painting the skin became a way for the desert people of India to cool down their body temperatures.

For those wanting the look of a tattoo without the permanence, a henna “tattoo” is one option. Henna art is not actually a tattoo – it’s a design that is placed on the skin by applying a paste that leaves behind a stain that lasts from 2-4 weeks and eventually washes or wears away.
Henna paste is made from a natural substance derived from a plant, Lawsonia Intermis. The plant is crushed into a powder that is used to make the paste. In its natural state, there is nothing in henna powder that can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Sometimes, the ingredients that are added to the powder to create the paste – such as eucalyptus oil – could possibly serve as an irritant to those with sensitive skin, but that is very rare. Natural henna paste leaves behind a stain on the skin that is a burnt orange or brown color.

"Everything you could ever want to know about waterslide temporary tattoos."

Why do people use temporary tattoos? There are too many reasons to list, but here are some of the most common. Most people just like to wear a tattoo for fun or to play a joke on a friend. Others use temporary tattoos to experiment with styles and locations before getting real tattoos. Women wear them like jewelry to accessorize their clothes. Sometimes they are used to cover a scar or old real tattoo. Children wear them to feel “grown up”.

How they are made??

Waterslide temporary tattoos are a specialized version of "waterslide decals". They are printed on decal paper, which is a heavy paper coated with a water-soluble gel. After the image is printed, a medical grade adhesive, similar to that on adhesive bandages, is applied over the image so it will bond to the skin. A special protective paper or plastic is placed over the tattoo to protect it during transport and storage, again similar to what you find on an adhesive bandage. There are many variations in the actual printing process that can affect the final quality and cost of a temporary tattoo.

Cautions to be aware of: The FDA has issued warnings that many manufacturers are not using FDA approved non-toxic ingredients. There is a risk of skin irritation with those products.

What makes quality tattoos different than budget tattoos??

Very few "manufacturers" actually print or control the printing process of the tattoos they market. When temporary tattoos first appeared in the U.S. in the eighties, the emphasis was on quality art and production that resulted in a realistic look for the tattoo. As interest in temporary tattoos grew, new suppliers entered the market, and cost became a major factor. This resulted in tattoos targeted to price points rather than quality. Many temporary tattoos in the market today are of poor quality and use bad artwork. Some are little more than stickers that stick to flesh. Others will only last a few hours before cracking or flaking off. In some cases they are not printed using FDA approved products. We strive to carry only above average and premium quality tattoos.

How long will temporary tattoos last??

The average time for a temporary tattoo to look good is around four days, but some people report as long as two weeks. Several factors contribute to how long the tattoo will last. Obviously, the quality of the tattoo is a major factor.

Assuming quality is equal, here are several things that affect the life of the tattoo. Natural body oils break the tattoo down over time, and rubbing from clothing wears on them from the surface. My wife can apply identical tattoos on her cleavage and ankle. The one on her cleavage starts breaking down in just a day or two, but the one on her ankle still looks good a week or so later. If you want your tattoo to last for the maximum time, you should make sure the area where you apply it is very clean and free of any oil. Clean with alcohol for best results. Avoid contamination with oils, perfumes, etc. Apply your tattoo in an area that won't be excessively rubbed by your clothing. Bathing can extend the life the life of the tattoo since that washes away oils. Wash gently with non-oily soap and pat dry. Skin type varies from one individual to another. Try an experiment by applying two tattoos of the same quality to different areas to determine what you can expect in the usable life of a temporary tattoo. Read our detailed application & care page for more information on this subject.

How do you test tattoos for quality??

We use "real world" testing to determine the quality of temporary tattoos from various manufacturers. We apply the tattoos and evaluate how well they bond to the skin and how easily the backing paper releases. We evaluate the appearance of the tattoos on flesh. Then we wear the tattoos until they degrade. Finally, we evaluate how difficult or easy it is to remove them. Based on the results, compared to our reference for above average and premium quality tattoos, we rate the quality. We only consider tattoos that rate above average or premium for addition to the Funtoos line.
